I need to start out with a shout out to Tracie Peterson. Internet, this is her 100th published novel. I mean what?! How awesome is that?! So congrats Tracie! I’m thankful to get to review this career achievement!
Alright, now onto our story.
Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.
Answering an advertisement for a “Lone Star bride,” she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn’t know.
Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.
Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.
When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake’s yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty’s dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.
What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways…
and dreams and secrets collide?
While it’s not a new story, i.e. mail order bride, since I don’t normally read those, it was a switch for me!
It took me a handful of pages to get into, but in a one scene, when the need arises, Marty whips out her hand gun to help save the day. Blame it on living in Texas, but, that’s what it took to capture my interest. I couldn’t help but think we would totally go to the range if we were friends in real life.
Overall it wasn’t a bad read. I would have liked to see more of the relationship between Marty and Jake. I thought Peterson did a good job of developing their friendship, but when it turned toward romance, it didn’t seem as developed. But I liked Jake, so reading through his character was entertaining.
Even though this story takes place in decades past, the same issues our characters dealt with are ones much like today. Issues of following your passion, others expectations, dealing with life’s curve balls. There were some good reminders about all these things.
Finally, some of the story line didn’t get wrapped up, but it didn’t bother me, as it sets you up for the next in the series!
So have you read any of Peterson’s novels? How about the mail order bride story lines?
