Within The Veil by Brandy Vallance | Book Review

January 23, 2019 by Jamie 6 Comments

Whenever I’m in the midst of a book slump, I feel bad for the books I’m about to read. It’s like the books are set up for failure before they even begin. The good news though, is there’s though books that get you out of the slump and you love them a little extra because of it and this book got me out of my slump!

They never should have met. But they might be made for each other.

Feya Broon, a Scottish half Gypsy, knows what it is to go hungry. Trapped in the Edinburgh tenements with a father lost to his past and only the faded memory of her mother’s faith, Feya is desperate to provide for her siblings. When an ill-conceived plan leads to thievery, she finds herself in the last place she’d ever want to be–captured by a palace guard. But there’s something about this man that tears at every preconceived notion she’s ever had about the haughty English.

Alasdair Cairncross never dreamed he’d be forced to transport a Gypsy woman halfway across the wilds of Scotland. The timing is disastrous, considering his fiancée’s imminent arrival and his father’s political goals. Not only that, but the fiery young woman threatens to lay bare secrets Alasdair would rather keep hidden. And yet the farther they travel together, the less concerned he finds himself with duty–both to the crown and to the plans his family has for him.

As their walls begin to crumble, Feya and Alasdair must fight to survive a decades-old feud, a Highland kidnapping, and the awakening of their own hearts.

This book was so romantic! And you know what? Sometimes I enjoy a good romance. It was sweetly developed and how it all came about – I give Brandy internet high fives for the creativity. There’s adventure, family (I loved her love of her siblings), a bit of unraveling mystery and as mentioned, romance!

Outside of the relationships in the story, I really enjoyed the history and other character traits. After reading her author notes, I became even more fascinated. I love when an author brings a piece of their lives into the novel – it often makes it a richer reading experience.

Adventure, feuds and a love that wasn’t supposed to happen from @BrandyVallance!

I enjoyed her debut, but I enjoyed this one a lot more, so treat yourself with the perfect Fall read!

Do you consider yourself a hopeless romantic?

(Thank you to the author and NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)

I am reading this one right now. Not your run of the mill romance! Loving it!

Not reading this review (which I am sure is amazing), but if your intro is any indication, this one sounds like a great read! I have it to read and when I haven’t read a book yet, I usually try to steer clear of most reviews until I’ve written mine. But either way, I’m excited to read this one!

I totally get that! I haven’t read too many of The Lady and the Lionheart for the very same reason! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
