You know what stinks? What stinks is that I’ve read all of Melanie Dickerson’s novels, so now I have to wait until October before her new novel comes out. Let’s talk about how patient I am…I’m not. Blame it on being the baby of the fam, but let’s just say patience isn’t one of my gifts. Alas, I shall learn to wait. But I know it’ll be worth it because it’s gonna be sooo good (a touch of Cinderella, a touch of Ivanhoe, a touch of JUST RELEASE ALREADY!)
Dickerson deserves every award her novels get, she’s a great writer and one I’m glad I came across in my reading world! She brings to life fairy tales I loved watching and reading as a kid. And if we’re being honest, those never get old. It’s guaranteed I’ll read whatever she releases.
I love having authors I can trust! And that makes this 4 Questions even more awesome!
Melanie Dickerson is the author of The Healer’s Apprentice and The Merchant’s Daughter, both Christy Award finalists, winner of The National Reader’s Choice Award for 2010’s Best First Book, and winner of the 2012 Carol Award in Young Adult fiction. She earned her bachelor’s degree in special education from The University of Alabama. She has taught children with special needs in Georgia and Tennessee, and English to adults in Germany and Ukraine. Now she spends her time writing and taking care of her husband and two daughters near Huntsville, Alabama.
Thank you again for sharing Melanie!
1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?
For the most part, things are going as I might have imagined. God is making my dreams come true. I have two wonderful daughters who are healthy and doing well, and I’m writing more books and getting them published by major publishers. Five years ago, I dreamed of getting my books published, of having a career as a novelist. But the thing I never imagined is that getting multiple books published wouldn’t affect my life a whole lot! I still have all the same responsibilities I ever had—cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring kids, etc. But I am very thankful for my life. It’s good to have normalcy amid the craziness of trying to promote my books and making up stories!
2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?
I wish I hadn’t quit writing when I started college. I wrote two novels when I was still in high school and I loved writing, but I got discouraged and decided to stop writing. I didn’t write or even read fiction for about fifteen years. I don’t regret going to college, or doing mission work for a year in Ukraine, or being a teacher in Georgia and Tennessee, but I wish I had continued to write in my free time. I’m very thankful that God has a way of bringing us back to where He wants us to be.
3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?
Definitely, finding out I was having my two daughters, and their births. I don’t think there’s anything more exciting in life than the birth of your own baby.
4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?
The most important thing for every person to remember is that God loves you and His plan is better than anything you can plan for yourself. If you seek God’s direction, you will never be sorry. He definitely has your best interests at heart and wants to give you your heart’s desires. Always put him first, and the rest will fall into place! It might sound cliché-ish, but it’s very true.
