(Disclaimer: If you haven’t finished or have yet to start reading the Eragon series, the following post contains some spoilers. But if it makes you feel better, I knew about these things before and still enjoyed the series)
Dear Christopher Paolini,
I’m sorry to start this letter so harshly, but why are you a murderer of love? Why? You set up the series where two of the main characters are introduced in the first few pages. They have a deep magical connection (I don’t mean that in a cheesy way, it’s literally based upon magic from the dragons) yet what do you do? You crush their love. Were you trying to be different? Throw something new out there? Well, to that I say LAME. If you were going for an audience reaction, congratulations you succeeded. Going for a positive one? I’m afraid you failed. Are these characters fictitious? Yes. Is my life at all altered by the fact that a human and elf don’t end up together? Absolutely not. I am quite aware of this, but I stand firm on principle friends. Principle. And then you even broke Saphira’s and Nasuada’s (human Queen) hearts. Clearly you need to read the classics – people end up together.
One more point. Not only did you murder love between Arya and Eragon, Eragon’s fate is almost too much to handle. This is what the French call 100% UNNECESSARY. Salt to the wound, knife to the back. Good news is I provided you with the opportunity to fix it with my own ending.
Jamie’s alternate ending:
One of the main Royals doesn’t die in final battle (it kinda felt like when Tonks and Lupin died – lame)
Ayra still becomes a Dragon Rider
Eragon and Ayra train Dragon Riders TOGETHER.
I gave you 2,912 pages. You gave me crushed hopes and dreams.
(Okay, so maybe I’m being a bit dramatic :), so besides the whole murder of love thing, I really did enjoy the series and definitely recommend it. While it’s no Tolkien and the epic tell of Frodo Baggins, it’s engaging, enjoyable and worth 2,912 pages).
If you read it, what did you think of it? If interested in purchasing the series, check it out on my amazon store!
