Shadowed by Grace follows the story of a young woman who is a photographer, trampling through Italy documenting World War II with her camera. Internet, this would have been me had I been alive in 1942. Then she gets caught up in rescuing classic art pieces. Holy batman, I’d be all in.
(Sidenote: This book makes me really excited to read and then go see The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, which has been waiting patiently on my kindle for.ever.)
So here’s a little more about the book!
Shadowed by Grace is a dramatic story inspired by the Monuments Men of World War II by acclaimed author Cara C. Putman. Desperate to save her dying mother, Rachel accepts her newspaper’s assignment to travel to Italy to capture images dangerously close to the front lines of WWII. Her real motive – to find the father she never knew — an artist she hopes can offer the comfort and support both she and her mother need to survive. It’s an unlikely situation for love and faith to flourish, but soon Rachel not only finds herself, but also her long-lost earthly father, and ultimately, the man her Heavenly father created to cherish and provide for her.
I loved learning more about this aspect of the war. With all I thought I knew about World War II, I honestly never really considered the priceless pieces of artwork that were stolen, taken or, even worse, destroyed for no good reason. That there were people who risked their lives to preserve and save art is fascinating and I’m grateful. Grateful that people understood it was worth it. I loved that!
I have to say I wasn’t a huge fan of the romance aspect. Rachel was a little bit frustrating. She was never sure of herself (even when I thought Scott’s actions were pretty clear), but in other scenes she seemed aloof. One chapter she would pine relentlessly for him to come back, then he would and she would sprint away as fast as possible. I think her actions may have stemmed from her history, but I found myself saying “Girl, you need to get it together. Let’s sit down and chat.” I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll leave it at that, but her journey did have some bumps in it (don’t we all though?).
I love that Putnam chose to focus on this part of the war and what people risked. And bonus points for shining light on some of the other ways women served in World War II. It’s a great reminder of so much that generation gave for freedom, for hope and for beauty.
