It’s no secret my favorite band is NEEDTOBREATHE and one of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis. After seeing NTB in concert, it hit me: Their music is like the stories and books Lewis wrote. How have I not seen this before?
No matter, because today I share the 9 reasons why this is true.
1. They are geniuses in their fields.
I’ve been known to sometimes be “dramatic” on this blog in my love of certain things ;), but with no exaggeration, I truly mean that. I talk about Clive once a month already, so y’all know my feelings about him. Let’s just say, if this was a music blog, there would be just as much chatter about NEEDTOBREATHE. The lyrics and music of NEEDTOBREATHE are….well…incredible. How do they create such amazing music?! And live in concert? Y’all. Amazing.
2. They both create very tattoo-able material.
Whether lyrics or Aslan quotes (below are a few favorites) it’s like they are meant to be tattooed. Tattoo artists should just go ahead and give a cut of their cash to these guys.
“Safe?….Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.” The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (I would also like to point out that the “Daylight” album cover features a lion).
Cause I’m not able
I’m not able
On my own – “Able”
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” Four Loves (So…this quote might be a little long, but I couldn’t help but share the whole thing)
God of mercy sweet love of mine
I have surrendered to Your design
May this offering stretch across the skies
And these Hallelujahs be multiplied – “Multiply”
“And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me Beloved…” The Last Battle
Consume me like a fire, ’cause I just want something beautiful. “Something Beautiful”
3. It’s impossible to pick a favorite of either.
Because all of them are the best of everything.
4. They will both blow your mind.
This is kind of like the first point, but I felt the need to expand. Just so y’all know I’m not messing around. Sometimes the only response to reading/listening to their works is “what in the actual what…my brain can’t even.” They write/wrote things that matter. They remind us that from the ashes comes life-changing beauty. Their works stem from honest truth and life and in turn captivate many.
5. They’re awesome human beings.
Granted, I don’t know them personally, but their actions help prove my point. C.S. Lewis was loved by many and housed children during the bombing of London in World War II (who, fun fact, were his inspiration behind the four siblings we know from Narnia). NEEDTOBREATHE supports Palmetto Medical Initiative ($1.00 from every tour ticket sale went directly to PMI) and they are nice to fans. Radness all around.
6. They create art that gets you thinking about what matters.
What’s my story? What’s my purpose? What am I here for? Those type of things, not you know, who is all up in the club gettin tipsy or shades of shenanigans. Whether something like Mere Christianity/”Signature of Divine [Yahweh]” or Screwtape Letters/”Devil’s Been Talking” (See what I mean? Even the titles have the same vibe), it’s worth your time to read and listen to both of them.
7. Both produce movie material that all y’all need to watch.
While I’m still waiting for an epic big screen creation of Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia have come to life and I love them (minus the Susan/Prince Caspian crush. LAME). NEEDTOBREATHE has this awesome documentary, “Prove the Poets Wrong,” released prior to their most recent album, showing their last tour and the road to “Rivers in the Wasteland.” If you haven’t already watched it, you’ll appreciate their music even more.
8. You know my feelings about Lord of the Rings (if not, see this post). The same applies to both C.S. Lewis and NEEDTOBREATHE.
If you don’t like them, well, I am left with no choice but to perhaps judge you a little bit. I feel it is my duty. 😉
9. Finally, they both produce the same reaction.
Which is along the lines of this, because sometimes no words are necessary.
All I’m saying is, if NEEDTOBREATHE announces they are going to play a concert at Oxford University (I’ll even roll with Cambridge), I’m booking a plane ticket immediately.
Who are some of your favorite musicians? Have you had the chance to experience NEEDTOBREATHE? I hope so!
