I first connected with Alison Morton with her release earlier this year, INCEPTIO, a fast paced and suspenseful debut novel. Well, guess what? She’s back with the second installment of the series! We head right back in the world of Roma Nova with PERFIDITAS.
Captain Carina Mitela of the Praetorian Guard Special Forces is in trouble – one colleague has tried to kill her and another has set a trap to incriminate her in a conspiracy to topple the government of Roma Nova. Founded sixteen hundred years ago by Roman dissidents and ruled by women, Roma Nova barely survived a devastating coup d’état thirty years ago. Carina swears to prevent a repeat and not merely for love of country.
Seeking help from a not quite legal old friend could wreck her marriage to the enigmatic Conrad. Once proscribed and operating illegally, she risks being terminated by both security services and conspirators. As she struggles to overcome the desperate odds and save her beloved Roma Nova and her own life, she faces the ultimate betrayal…
Creating a “new” culture and world as Morton has done can present some challenges, especially when there’s old Roman names and terminology used. While it’s an adjustment, once you’re in the novel, it’s a smooth transition. In this second book, Morton dives deeper into a society completely run and dominated by women. Not only is it creative, but it’s full of action and suspense. Morton keeps Roma Nova alive with her fast paced storytelling and of course some twists and turns!
(Thank you Alison for the advanced reader copy!)
