“Becoming a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, requires you to resist the world which wants press you into its mold.”
Whenever a theology or Christian living book appears on this blog, you may have noticed it isn’t so much a review, but my thoughts that hopefully lead to some discussion. Unless the book turns out to be a blasphemous mess, I would rather use the time to talk about it! And if you don’t share my beliefs, I would love to have an honest dialog as well!
So with that, here’s more on The Hole in Our Holiness, Filling the Gap between Gospel Passion and the Pursuit of Godliness by Kevin DeYoung.
This wasn’t an intimidating read either. There were a couple chapters that had a bit more of a theological vibe, but nothing anyone couldn’t handle. I had plenty of quotes picked out, so it was hard to narrow the ones I wanted to share, but here’s a handful. What do you think?
“There is a gap between our love for the Gospel and our love for godliness. This must change. It’s not pietism, legalism, or fundamentalism to take holiness seriously. It’s the way of all those who have been called to a holy calling by a holy God.”
“You can’t make sense of the Bible without understanding that God is holy and that this holy God Is intent on making a holy people to live with Him forever in a holy heaven.”
“Never forget: first God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, then he gave them the law. God’s people were not redeemed by observing the law but they were redeemed so they might obey the law.”
“We can talk all day long about our love for God, but if we do not keep his Commandments we are liars and the truth is not in us.”
“Our God is not a capricious slave driver. He is not hyper-sensitive and prone to fits of rage on account of slight offenses. He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Exodus 34:6).”
Do you find you’ve missed out on the importance of holiness? I have definitely been guilty of this. This book was a great reminder of what it means as a believer and follower of Christ. I would love to hear your thoughts!
