Once again it’s because of a preview I picked up this book (plus the song in the preview was really good). I was a little weary because when I think of Stephenie Meyer, I think of Twilight. While I did read all the books (you just couldn’t stop, trust me), I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a main character more than I did Bella (although I did want to give Holden Caulfield a good smack in the face 😉 )
So I decided to pick up The Host and see what is was all about. It’s sci-fi, following the story of Melanie Stryder in a world where aliens have taken over by inserting their souls into human hosts. Melanie is part of the human rebellion but gets caught. While a new soul is inserted, she resists and they form an unlikely bond to save the ones she loves.
I have to say, I really enjoyed it. As different twists came (how much the preview left out!), I found myself more and more into the story. I’m all about creativity and this one kept me totally engaged. And man, did I like the characters so much more, especially Wanderer/Melanie.
It’s like what the book cover said: “Stephenie Meyer brings us a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the very essence of what it means to be human.”
Even if you wanted to drop kick the Twilight Series, don’t give up on Meyer just yet. Give this one a chance, I think you just might enjoy yourself!
